Threads of Fire

The Amyrlin Seat, Egwene knows--even now--is not one child. It is an ancient duty, the first servant of a tower that has endured for hundreds of years. Just as it brought her to serve the Hall of the Tower, so too will it bind together the women who take their places there in the years and centuries to come.

There is Lumaise din Tilme Bright Lake, born on the water and raised to the Gray Ajah, an Atha'an Miere who spent her youth travelling between the nations and her adulthood being vigilant for peace between them. Among her many tattoos--a soaring hawk, a thunderbolt, a vase--there is now a white teardrop, shining bright on her dark skin. When she dies in Tar Valon, it is on land, the Jendai Prophecies binding her no longer to the water.

There is Megat of the Salt Flat Sept of the Nakai Aiel, of the Red Ajah. She is the fastest to pass the raising tests in decades. "Why should I care for worlds that are not and be distracted by people who are not? These tasks bring me no honor." Her Warder and husband, Jodain of the Black Rock Shaarad, was once an honored guardsman; now, he teaches Younglings the art of fighting with spears. Megat sees them learn quickly, without needing to stand around and hesitate over the names of forms. They earn much ji.

And there is Rekath Lerram, a great Healer of the Yellow Ajah. She is a slow speaker, waiting for the Hall to come to consensus before taking action. Rekath knows how to adapt many weaves for humans into more effective forms for animals, when to mix in threads of Air to relieve a horse's fatigue, or how to calm a nervous sheep from running around. But her favorite weaves are those that will help guide a raken, like those of her Seanchan homeland.

It is Egwene who has laid the bonds between these peoples and the Tower. So when the Amyrlins of years and Ages to come remember Lumaise's sprays of Water, Megat's forces of Earth, Rekath's shades of Air, so too do they remember the Flame of Tar Valon, and the fire of Egwene al'Vere, who dreams still.

It was just one martini.

Her feet were pinched and strained in her new heels and it was summer and it was hot so she stopped into the closest acceptable bar and there in a secluded booth she saw long blonde hair that was naturally (annoyingly) windswept and tossled and slightly, endearingly, tangled under one ear.

Or maybe it was three.

As her heels clicked on the tile and she threw over her shoulder the command for two martinis and that forever sun-kissed face with such a bright, wide, childish smile (which she bent down and kissed with ease and without a second thought) peered up at her, she thought how silly it was to not know they would always find each other in the end.

Some times they laugh and say it was five.

And several hours later - after all the bars closed and all the shops were dark and there was a worried message on her phone flashing at her - when she crawled into bed, still fully clothed, and planted a sloppy kiss on Chuck's serious face as he asked with a drawl (it was so endearing that drawl and sometimes she would tease him that they should have been Southern royalty and he always retorted that he believed they were in another life) if she had enjoyed her drink - and maybe her mascara was a little smeared, and maybe there was the slight line of lipgloss on her jaw, but he didn't comment and all she said was, "Serena sends her love."

Blair Waldorf likes doing her own manicures. She goes to the salons sometimes, of course, because there usually simply isn’t enough time in her day to take thirty minutes out of to paint nails with and besides making the occasional appearance at Sakura is expected, but every once in a while it’s nice to just sit at her vanity, pull out her favourite Deborah Lippman shade from the vast array assembled in the trunk beside her chaise longue, and just apply a few layers of Satin Doll or Tiny Dancer.

There’s something almost calming about painting one’s nails. She’d call it therapeutic if she weren’t personally opposed to trendy buzzwords, but there’s a certain measuredness and precision called for by the activity, a necessary slowing-down for the sake of art (because everybody knows what happens when you get up before your nails are dry, and there are few things Blair hates more than goopy residue on her nails). She’d been terrible at it as a girl, before Seche Vite had invented quick-dry drops, but Serena had been even more of a disaster and that had been gratifying in its own way, although Blair supposes she oughtn’t have been surprised that the girl with the attention span of a goldfish suffering from ADHD wouldn’t be able to succeed at an activity requiring actual patience.

Although in all fairness, Blair supposes patience isn’t actually her strong suit either. She blames her Mother, because Eleanor is always easiest to hold responsible for these types of things - a theory her therapist had always validated, so Blair feels pretty justified in appropriating the blame (not so much a Waldorf thing as an Upper East Side thing anyhow). Still, if Blair has learned anything over the past few years (and she’s not so far gone that she can’t acknowledge she has much to learn), it’s that patience is vital to success. Forcing the pieces of a scheme to fall into place before their time - this is probably the biggest and most consistent mistake Blair has been guilty of making when it comes to planning for her future. She thinks of Louis and something in her heart twists, calls out to her for attention not unlike the unborn baby Blair might have had had it not been for the accident - only then she remembers, But I’ve cried already, and decides to think about something else.

There’s a pretty mauve shade - Modern Love, the label calls it - that catches her eye against all the other purples in her collection, and Blair lifts the bottle by its black cap and sets it on top of her counter. Her face in the mirror is bare, devoid of almost all make-up except for a hint of Dior’s Hydra Life BB Cream. Blair’s got good skin - Dr. Weinstein, her dermatologist, had made sure of that - but she still doesn’t like to look at the sight of her reflection completely naked in the mirror. “You don’t even look any different,” Dan had once whined, “you’re beautiful either - every - way” - but Dan is from Brooklyn so his opinions on all things aesthetic is automatically irrelevant. She can probably acknowledge that a lot of it is psychological, her preoccupation with not wanting to look at her bare face, but Blair is fairly convinced that a more discerning eye would agree that her face just looks different without the thin layer of BB cream - older, somehow. It disappoints her and Blair does not like to be disappointed, least of all by herself.

And so she learned the ways of war as she learned the sweeping grace of her body, her hands beckoning ships to crash upon her shores.

To their doom they sail, they march, they fall, unable to resist her siren's call.

For men have always loved war and so, she vows, they will always love her.

But never will they conquer, never rule her body and soul, for she is the kingdom and the glory, forever and ever, amen.

Contracts aren't binding at eight, but she says, “Promise,” anyway.

At some point in the war Ginny forgot Harry. She doesn't feel guilty about it, it's not like she tried to forget him; it just happened. She's sure he doesn't think about her a lot either, wherever he is, fighting the very incarnation of evil. Besides, maybe they don't want the same things out of life, after all. For one, she wants to live.

Luna didn't forget Harry. Ginny wouldn't be surprised to hear that she calls him at night in her quiet prayers, as familiar as she is when she addresses whatever god it is she believes in: "You know, Harry's a good guy. I like him. He picked up my books once, when Goyle tripped me. D'you think you could maybe let him live?"

Ginny decided a long time ago that the best course of action was believing in herself. Still, something her fingers prickle with the urge to go up to her and say, I like the way you pray.

Could she do that? Could she even do that?

There's something beautiful about it, charmingly fierce, about the idea of women holding a siege. Ginny prefers to think about it like that: they're the ones holding the siege, and the others are the losing party, powerless in front of their inevitable demise. It makes sense. Everybody knows the good guys always win.

Yes, there's something beautiful about that. It's the colors of their hair, maybe, redwhiteyellowblackpink, or their faces when they fight.

(Or maybe it's the dirt under their fingernails, at night when they come back to their bed, that mixes with the blood.)

Only Luna would use 'beautiful' for a Hex.

"I don't know. Can you give me something in exchange?"

Luna, when she smiles, has a tiny vampire tooth on the top right of her mouth. How come Ginny never noticed that before?

"What do you want?"

Luna looks at her, her eyes like water. Ginny brings a finger to her own lips, unconsciously, to check if Luna's gaze didn't leave a drop of water there.

"If you die. What are you going to be?"

"What about you?"

"I don't want to be an angel."

When Ginny dies, she's going to be a parcel of this darkness. She'd like to know how it feels, for once.

"Can I kiss you?"

Ginny couldn't tell who asks. Maybe her. Maybe she wouldn't ask, just do it.

"You can try."

Kissing Luna is like kissing a ghost, only with sugar and lemon added.

"So? Did I succeed?"

Someone laughs. A passing pupil throws them a glare, there's a war going on out there, you know.

Dean and Neville and Seamus and Padma and Parvati and the room that molds itself to their communal desire. Laughter, etched like a healing balm over bruises and blood-swelled skin.

Luna takes Ginny's hand.

"We could die tomorrow," she whispers in Ginny's ear, like it's something to be excited about, a secret, an hymn.

It's like this:

Somewhere in the universe there's a picture of Luna with her head thrown back as she straddles Ginny's lips and whispers things Ginny would rather not listen to. Their kisses are something between bruising and so soft they don't leave a trace; half-kisses for halflings, sounds fitting.

"I love you," Luna breathes.

It doesn't mean anything, that much Ginny knows. Luna loves more than she can afford.

At some point in their shared, short, somewhat sacred history, Luna traces a little cross in blood on a step of the big stairway. When Ginny asks what it is, she twirls her hand, her code for you wouldn't understand. "Blocking," she says.

Ginny does understand.

Then something explodes, glass shatters, and she doesn't get the chance to tell Luna that she's already fallen.
