THAT SCENE IS A THING OF BEAUTY
It's seriously one of my favorite scenes between them, that and the gorgeous intimidation don't-fuck-with-me-I'll-throw-your-ass-over-my-shoulder earlier scene. FOR ALL THE REASONS YOU STATED SO ELOQUENTLY! It's one of the first instances (I believe) where Damon expresses in deed that he doesn't care if he pisses her off and she hates him, he's simply not going to allow her to be hurt, killed or trapped if he can prevent it. And the beating at his chest and holding her still while Stefan listens to his brother do what he can't - put Elena's safety before absolutely anything else, even her own wishes.
